Performance Fabrics

07/31/2023

Like any product, there are a variety of choices that all sit on a range. Fabric is no different. We offer options from solid fabric, leather, performance fabrics, along with several others. Each serves its own purpose depending on the need and desired look. Let’s get into it!

Crypton – This performance fabric is used by many high-end retailers and is known for being stain, odor, & moisture resistant, along with easy clean up.  It is an environmentally aware product that has a recycling program, several certifications, and are free of formaldehyde, heavy metals, phenols, etc. Their products include an immersion bath and then are heated to aid in the seal. Along with that, they use a silver-ion antimicrobial protectant that stops the growth of odor-causing bacteria. They measure the amount of protectant needed based on the texture and fiber count of each fabric.

Another perk of this performance fabric is, they’ve maximized the durability and abrasion resistance, while maintaining the soft, livable texture. When it comes to cleaning, it’s pretty simple. For general upkeep of this performance fabric, is it suggested to brush any debris, dirt, etc. before it can be pushed into the fabric, along with spot cleaning as it occurs. For when those spots happen, before using anything else, vacuum up debris, and blot up the spill with a clean, soft towel. Next, prepare a solution with ¼ tsp with either enzyme detergent (Tide, Woolite, or Dawn dish soap) per 1c. lukewarm water. Mist the solution on the area. Be careful not to oversaturate. Lightly scrub and work the solution into the area with a sponge or soft bristle brush. Working from the outside of the stain in so to not spread. Rinse the brush or sponge frequently. Allow the solution to sink into the fabric and then rinse thoroughly to clean up all residue. Any excess moisture, blot up. If needed, repeat steps 3-6. Once complete, let the fabric air-dry. Revolution – This is a U.S based performance fabric company that makes their products from an upcycled fiber called Olefin. The Olefin yarn, used for Revolution products, is also utilized to make milk jugs, which plays into the fabric’s durability and cleanability. Instead of being buried or burned off, they’ve found a useful re-use of other products and created a durable fabric. To clean, remove any loose debris. Spray or blot with water and a bleach solution on the affected area. Let soak. Blot up excess liquid and rinse. Let the fabric air dry. For further cleaning instructions, click here.

Solid Fabrics – The make-up of these products will vary depending on the exact fabric, but many rank well in the abrasion test and can be cleaned, depending on the fabric, with a water-based, solvent, or water solvent cleaner. They don’t quite meet the level of the Crypton or Revolution, but certainly are not a poor option. Again, it goes back to the look and use desired for these products. Each fabric will note the cleaning code, here is where to find yours.

Ultra-Leather – This is a man-made product that is making its way into the interiors of high-end cars. It requires less maintenance, while being durable. Using “green” products it promotes healthier indoor air quality, is free from heavy metals, among other contaminants, and has high abrasion/rub limits. For general cleaning, wipe spills immediately and use soap and water. For harsher spills you can use alcohol-based cleaners like Fantastik and 409. For stubborn stains, wipe the area with isopropyl (rubbing alcohol) ASAP. Rinse the area with water. Air dry. Here’s their cleaning instructions with a video!

Faux Leather – This is a plastic based product that is then treated with wax, dye, or polyurethane to create the color or texture. It’s not as durable as your ultra or real leather, but still has its place as it is more cost-effective. Something to be aware of is that it is more likely to crack and peel over time. Since it is a non-porous material, a pro is that most stains will sit on top. To aid in the longevity and not dry out this product, it is suggested to use water and non-harsh cleaning solutions such as a mild soap or detergent and a soft cloth. On the area, rub gently in circular motions. Wipe after with clean water. It is said, treat it as your skin. No bleach. Direct sunlight will cause wear to any product.

Leather – The leather we offer is a semi-aniline leather which means the leather is treated with a semi-aniline dye that is slightly pigmented. This allows the leather to maintain some of its natural markings. It is then treated with a light protective layer. Aniline-leather is known for being soft to touch, good for high-traffic use/areas, requires less maintenance, and is more affordable. Something to keep in mind, though a very durable product, any kind of leather can and will scratch. The occasional wipe to rid of debris never hurts. To clean, a soft cloth with lukewarm water and mild soap is appropriate. Always mix up the solution, don’t apply it directly. When complete, use a clean cloth with water to wipe any residue. Air dry. As far as conditioning goes, it is suggested roughly twice a year to aid in the longevity of the product. Before conditioning, clean the leather as listed above and let it dry overnight. The following day, wipe it down again with a clean dry cloth. Using the conditioner, such as mink oil, test a small, obscure area and let it sit for an hour. The area will be darker due to the hydration. Once you let the spot test rest, apply a small portion of the oil to a microfiber cloth and work the solution in with circular motions. Cover the entire surface. Allow the leather to dry/rest overnight. Once that has been done, use a clean, dry cloth to wipe away any residue.

Our recommendation – All the options, are suitable but obviously especially with the types of products we provide, for us, the more durable, the better. Our first choice is the performance fabric. Just be sure that whichever you choose, you understand the care and/or maintenance needed.

A friendly reminder, if you plan to place and order with us and are hoping for it in time for Thanksgiving, our production time is 12-14 weeks and we are coming up on that. Keep that in mind!
